Psychopathy
YOU, a thriller series on Netflix... I'm sure by now everyone has watched the show and has met the brilliant Joe Goldberg who kills for love. Throughout the show, he lives a very normal life with a job as a bookstore manager but is more of a serial killer and very selfish. Now that's a straight-up psychopath!
It's very hard to notice a psychopath. This is because they live normal lives, have steady jobs and families, are educated, very intelligent, very neat, and very charming. You'll not find psychopaths cold on the streets, they live among us.
Psychopaths derive pleasure from hurting other people because they lack empathy. They don't form real permanent relationships but form fake short-term relationships so that they can damage and move on to the next, easily done because they don't have a conscience. They are very manipulative and use people for their benefit.
Psychopaths are born and not made... This means that one is born a psychopath. Psychopathy can be caused by genetic predisposition and sometimes underdevelopment of brain components responsible for impulse control and emotional regulation.
As much as psychopaths are known to be cold and heartless, they are also human. They love their family members, pets, and spouses but find it hard to trust the outside world. At some point, they feel sad when they hurt others but they can't control their actions. Psychopaths also crave love and affection and if they don't get it, they force it.
Long-term psychotherapy of at least 5 years or more and the use of mood stabilizers can reduce psychopathic symptoms.
And hey! If you haven't watched you, it better be on your to-do list.
